About the author: Charles Lindholm (1946–2023) was an American anthropologist and University Professor of Anthropology at Boston University. Educated at Columbia University, he conducted influential fieldwork among the Swat Pukhtun of northern Pakistan and later taught at Columbia, Barnard, and Harvard. His interdisciplinary scholarship explored psychological anthropology, charisma, emotion, romantic idealization, authenticity, egalitarianism, and the societies of the Islamic Middle East.
