Prelude to a Kiss, Craig Lucas’s highly acclaimed play, transforms a classic romantic fairy tale into a stunningly powerful evocation of sex, death, and compassion in times that are far from compassionate.

Peter and Rita are intelligent young professionals who meet at a Manhattan party, fall in love, and get married in the usual way. But during their honeymoon something very unusual happens, and Peter’s love for Rita is challenged. For Peter discovers that Rita’s soul has migrated into the body of an old, potbellied man who is dying of cancer. And Peter, who has sworn to love Rita even more in old age, is presented with the opportunity to live by his words.” (flap copy)

Prelude to a Kiss ran on Broadway for 440 performances from 1990-91. It was extraordinarily well received and reviewed. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and received a Tony nomination for Best Play. In 1992, the play was adapted for the screen in a film starring Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan.
