A very good copy of the first edition of the debut novel by Elif Shafak.

  • Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
  • Year: 2004
  • Format: hardcover with DJ
  • 368 pp
From the publisher's description:
Follows the adventures of three young Turks loose in America as they negotiate their desires in a land that seems to allow limitless indulgences.

This title is exceedingly scarce on the secondhand market. Why might this be? Let us consider Shafak's second novel, The Bastard of Istanbul. This work was a bestseller but attracted the attention of Turkish authorities who disapproved of her characters' discussion of the Armenian Genocide.

Consequently, Shafak was tried in court in 2006 for “insulting Turkishness." Though acquitted, she continued to received threats against her physical wellbeing.

We speculate that this controversy may have impacted the perceived collectability of The Saint, or else have contributed to a perception of the book as taboo.

Condition: pages are clean and bright, unread. No obvious shelf wear to jacket. Small discoloration (.25" diameter) on the fore-edge; minimal foxing.

About the author: "Born in Strasbourg, France, and raised in Turkey, Shafak brings a unique perspective to her writing, informed by her bicultural heritage. She is deeply influenced by both her academic background in gender and women's studies and her personal experiences. Shafak is also an active social media user, engaging with her readers about literature, politics, and personal empowerment."
