This listing consists of the booklet Legislation and Race Relations: a summary of the main South African law which affect race relationships as well as its "companion booklet", Action, Reaction, and Counteraction: a review of the Non-White opposition to the apartheid policy, counter-measures by the Government, and the eruption of new waves of unrest.

From the introductory note to Legislation and Race Relations:

“The object of this pamphlet is to present a factual summary of the laws that bear on race relations [in South Africa]. [¶] Details of the various measures have inevitably had to be omitted; but it is hoped that the summaries will prove useful as a source of reference. [¶] Pre-1948 legislation has been separated from [those] that passed since. There are two reasons for this. The first is that measures introduced in the earlier period were of an ad hoc nature. After 1948 the legislative programme introduced to implement the policy of separate development (usually known as apartheid) had a more clearly defined pattern.

Notes on condition: Both booklets are first editions and in very good condition. Bright yellow (card) softcover. L&RR has a stapled spine; some wear and cracking at the spine in addition to the general scuffing from shelf wear. AR&C is perfect-bound with six internal staples. It has light general wear and scuffing as well as more noticeable wear and fraying at the spine. Both booklets have clean pages with no folds, tears, or extraneous marks.

Notable provenance; association copy. Each booklet bears an ink ownership inscriptions on the title pages: “Marilee Karl // 244 McGiffert."

Karl (1941-2024) was a U.S. civil rights activist, global feminist organizer, author, and founder of feminist organizations. She co-founded Isis International in 1974, one of the first international feminist NGOs, dedicated to advancing women’s communication, knowledge-building, political organizing, collective learning, and transformative leadership. Originally established in Rome, Italy, Isis International later expanded its presence to Geneva, Switzerland; Santiago, Chile; Kampala, Uganda; and Manila, Philippines. Her work was characterized by a focus on feminist analysis of women’s roles in development, the amplification of feminist voices in the Global South, and collective action addressing issues such as food security and natural resource management. She was also an advocate for peace, emphasizing the role of women as peace-makers. In recognition of her contributions, Karl was included among the 1,000 women nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

We speculate that "244 McGiffert" might refer to a room in McGiffert Hall at Union Theological Seminary.
